Individual Details
Baron Ferencz Balassa de Gyarmat et Kékkő
( - )
Ferencz was the son of László Balassa and his second wife Fruzsina Somosi. He was first engaged to Anna Horváth de Litva, but did not marry her. With his first wife Margit Ficsor he had five sons of whom Imre would have progeny. With his Protestant second wife Orsolya Perényi, daughter of István Perényi and Orsolya Ujlaki, he had three sons and two daughters of whom János would have progeny.
Ferencz was Ban of Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, Szörény and Jajca. He was killed in the disastrous Hungarian defeat by the Turks at Mohács on 29 August 1526. Along with the cream of the Hungarian nobility, King Lajos II was also killed in the battle, after which Hungary (in reality the part not controlled by the Turks) became absorbed into the Habsburg empire. Lajos was the last 'independent' king of Hungary. His sister Anna was married to the future Emperor Ferdinand I.
