Elisabeth of Luxembourg Princess of Bohemia and Hungary

(Bef 27 Nov 1409 - 25 Dec 1442)

Elisabeth was born on 7 October 1409, probably in Visegrád, Hungary, the only daughter of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor, king of Hungary and Bohemia, by his second wife Barbara of Celje. Her father was the last male descendant of the house of Luxemburg on the imperial throne.

As Elisabeth was not the daughter of Sigismund's first wife Maria II, queen of Hungary, she was not descended from the Angevin kings of Hungary, but in many lines she descended from the old Arpád kings of Hungary. Her maternal grandfather was Herman II, Graf von Celje, whose parents were the Slovenian ruler Herman I, Graf von Celje, and Katarina of Bosnia (who apparently descended also from the Nemanjic kings of Serbia and Katalin of Hungary, a daughter of Stephan V, king of Hungary). In right of her paternal grandparents, she was through Emperor Karl IV an heiress of Bohemia, and through Elisabeth von Pommern an heiress of Poland, of its Kujavian Piast branch of kings. Thus she was a leading claimant to several Slavic kingdoms and principalities.

She was also a descendant of Arpád kings of Hungary through her great-grandmother Elisabeth of Bohemia, who herself was granddaughter of Kunigunde of Halicz, whose mother Anna was a daughter of Béla IV, king of Hungary. This was not a very close Hungarian connection, but all the other extant descendants of the Arpáds were approximately as distant at that time. Additionally, she descended from Konstanze of Hungary, daughter of Béla III of Hungary, and wife of Przemysl Ottokar I, king of Bohemia.

On 28 September 1421 at Esztergom in Hungary, Elisabeth married Albrecht V, then duke of Austria, son of Albrecht IV, duke of Austria, and Johanna-Sofia of Bavaria. After her father died, Albrecht was elected king of Hungary, of Bohemia and of Germany. Of their four children, two daughters would have progeny. Her only son Ladislaus 'Postumus' of Austria, king of Hungary and Bohemia, died a teenager without issue, leaving the remaining kingdoms of the family to be succeeded by elected rulers. Her daughters Anna, duchess of Thuringia, and Elisabeth, queen of Poland, continued the family which afterwards regained some of these kingdoms.

Elisabeth died at Gyor, Hungary, on 19 December 1442, three years after her husband, leaving her children minors. Her mother Barbara of Celje survived her.
