Georg Fugger

(8 May 1453 - 14 Mar 1506)

Georg Fugger was born in Augsburg on 8 May 1453, the son of Jakob Fugger 'the Elder' and Barbara Bäsinger. In 1486 he married Regina Imhof, daughter of Peter Imhof and Regina Walter. They had six children of whom Raymund and Anton would have progeny. Raymond is an ancestor of the counts Fugger von Kirchberg und Weissenhorn. Anton is an ancestor of the princes Fugger von Glött und Babanhausen.

Emperor Friedrich III was penniless to the point of having to mortgage his silver and copper mines in Tyrol to the Fuggers of Augsburg, which enabled them to embark on an astonishing career making them the bankers of Europe as well as the financial backbone of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1494 the firm 'Ulrich Fugger and Company' became the first open trading company in Europe, and changed its name to 'Ulrich Fugger & Brothers of Augsburg'. In the firm were Ulrich, the head of the family in Augsburg, Georg, the head of the Nuremburg branch, and Jakob, in charge of international business. In this year alone the firm made a profit of more than 54,000 guilders.

Georg Fugger died in Augsburg on 14 March 1506.
