Princess Eleonora de Aragon of Neaples

(22 Jun 1450 - 11 Oct 1493)

Daughter of Ferrante I of Aragón, king of Naples and Isabella di Chiaramonte, Eleonore was born on 22 June 1450. On 3 July 1473 in Ferrara she married Ercole I d'Este, duke of Modena, Ferrara and Reggio, son of Niccolo III d'Este, margrave of Modena, and his third wife Ricciarda di Saluzzo. They had six children of whom a son and two daughters would have progeny.

Eleonore was a cultured woman of the early Renaissance. She surrounded herself with gifted writers and artists, including the poet Matteo Maria Boiardo (c.1434-1494) who in 1473 joined the retinue that escorted Eleonore to meet her spouse Ercole at Ferrara. Ercole himself was not a learned man (he knew little or no Latin), but with Eleonore's help he assembled a great library and vigorously supported religion and the arts and sciences, especially vocal music and the theatre. Eleonore died on 11 October 1493.

Francesco Laurana (b.1430) is best known for his stylised portrait busts of royalty. Among Laurana's subjects was Eleonore of Aragón, whose figure is housed in the Regional Gallery of Sicily in Palermo. Laurana's minimalist approach evokes an aristocratic elegance created by his emphasis on simple geometric forms. Prominent features are expressed while others are minimised. Details are kept to the most essential ones needed to present the subject.
