Bertolo was the son of Gentile I Orsini and his wife Costanza. In 1277 Cardinal Giovanni Gaetano Orsini was elected pope as Nicholas III, the first pope to reside in the Vatican palace. He died suddenly in 1280, but not before he had showered his relatives with possessions and offices. His nephew Bertolo became count of Romagna and a senator of Rome. Bertolo's wife Filippa is of unknown origin, he died in 1288.
