Duke Raoul (le Vaillant) of Lorraine

(1318 - 26 Aug 1346)

Raoul was born in Pacques in 1318, the son of Frédéric IV, duke of Lorraine, and Elisabeth of Austria. Called 'le Vaillant' (the Valiant), he was duke of Lorraine from 1329 to his death. Though he was only nine when his father died, succeeding to the duchy under the regency of his mother (until 1334), he was a warrior prince, taking part in four separate wars in Lorraine, France, Brittany, and Iberia.

At Pont-ŕ-Mousson in 1329 Raoul married Eleonore de Bar, daughter of Edouard I, comte de Bar, and Marie de Bourgogne. Eleonore died in 1332 without progeny. In 1334 he married Marie de Châtillon de Blois, daughter of Guy I de Châtillon, comte de Blois, and Marguerite de Valois, the sister of Philippe VI, king of France. Of their eight children only their son Jean would have progeny.

In 1337 Henri IV, comte de Bar, seigneur de Cassel, brother of Raoul's first wife, refused to do homage for a few seigniories he held of the duke. Raoul was forced to devastate Pont-ŕ-Mousson and its environs. In a series of reprisals, Henri ravaged the west of Lorraine and Raoul attacked the Barrois. The war was ended only through the intervention of Philippe VI of France. By that time the ties of Lorraine to France had become very strong. Raoul assisted Philippe with troops to lift Edward III of England's siege of Tournai in the opening phase of the Hundred Years' War.

During a brief Anglo-French peace, Raoul journeyed to the Iberian Peninsula to aid Alfonso XI, king of Castile and León, in the _Reconquista._ He battled the Moors of Granada and fought with distinction in the Battle of Gibraltar on 3 November 1340.

On his return to France, he came to the aid of his French brother-in-law, Charles de Châtillon de Blois, titular duc de Bretagne, in the War of the Breton Succession. He returned to King Philippe's side at the Battle of Crécy and was killed there on 25 August 1346.
