Individual Details
Sofie von Württenberg
(1340 - Apr 1369)
Daughter of Eberhard II 'der Greiner', Graf von Württemberg, and Gräfin Elisabeth von Henneberg-Schleusingen, Sofie was born after 1340. On 6 April 1353 she became engaged to Jean I, duke of Lorraine, son of Raoul, duke of Lorraine, and his second wife Marie de Châtillon de Blois. Their marriage took place on 16 December 1361. As it was the first marriage of a Württemberg countess with a ruling prince, it was celebrated in Stuttgart with thirteen days of festivities. Sofie and Jean had four children of whom two sons and a daughter would have progeny.
Twice, in 1361 and 1367, Sofie's father Eberhard arranged for her rights of inheritance to be documented as secondary to those of the male members of the House of Württemberg, in 1367 through a joint inheritance agreement with the ducal house of Lorraine. Presumably the influence of Württemberg was expected to be strengthened through this agreement.
In April 1369 she died in Stuttgart and was buried there. It is not known why she was not buried in Nancy.
