Marquis Karl I von Baden

(1424 - 24 Feb 1475)

Karl was born in 1424, the eldest son of Jakob I, Markgraf von Baden und Hachberg, and Catherina de Lorraine. Karl and his brother Bernhard were often on campaign with their father. They were with him when the insurgent Franconian and Swabian cities declared war in support of the German princes. Karl and his brother took part in the siege of Esslingen in 1449, and they were with their father in 1450 during the peace negotiations in Heidelberg. In 1415 in Speyer they settled conflicts with the count palatine Friedrich of the Rhine.

On 14 July 1447 at Pforzheim Karl married Katharina of Austria, daughter of Ernst I 'the Iron', duke of Austria, and his second wife Cimburka of Masovia, and sister of the future Emperor Friedrich III. They had six children, of whom a son and a daughter would have progeny. Karl died on 24 February 1475.
