James R Wong, MD passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife and surrounded by family on Saturday, May 17, 2008. He was born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America to James H and Esther (Chung) Wong. At the age of six weeks, his mother died and he was raised by his loving step-mother Iris whom he always knew as mom.At 17, Jim came to the United States to pursue a career in medicine. He obtained a BS degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois and went on to complete his medical degree at Stitch School of Medicine, followed by his surgical residency at the West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois. He was a remarkably benevolent physician with a career spanning fifty years including general practice, surgery, emergency, and correctional medicine. He was privileged to have held the position of medical director at several nursing homes and at the Suring and Nicolet Health Clinics. He retired in 2003, due to illness, from the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections.Simply stated, Jim loved life and all it had to offer. He particularly enjoyed travel, boating, photography, karaoke, dance, classical music, reading, western movies, and the Green Bay Packers. His sense of humor and loving kindness touched many lives.He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Nancy and their daughter Ashley; his five children Mary, Patty (Jason) Wheeler, Donna (Patrick) Balistreri, Patrick (Leslie), and Timothy; Nancy´s three children Dr Sarah (Dr Daniel) d´Hulst, Susan (Christopher) Blom, Steve (Korrine) Floriano; and 16 grandchildren—Brooke and Mac Wheeler; Jack, Grant, Sam, and Lucy Balistreri; Andy and Tony Wong; Dallin, Addison, Anna, and Quinn d´Hulst; Hannah, Tyler, and Simon Blom; and Keylee Floriano. He is also survived by five sisters Barbara, Audrey, Sheila, Joan, and Marjorie and four brothers Edward, Kendrick, Claude, and Dennis.He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Iris, sisters Joyce and Lucille, brothers Cecil and Hubert, and in-laws Marjorie and Earl Denis.Friends may join in a celebration of Jim´s life on Tuesday, May 20th from 3-8 pm (prayer service at 7 pm) at Proko-Wall Funeral Home at 1630 E Mason in Green Bay. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at St Francis Xavier Cathedral on Monroe St. from 10:30-11:30 am. Mass of Christian burial at 11:30. Online condolences may be expressed at www.prokowall.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Our family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Jim´s physician Dr Jason Hoppe and to our Unity Hospice team—especially Sharon B, Molly, Chaplain Steve, Deb, and Joan—who helped carry us through this difficult journey.And to our daughter Susan...Thank you for your constant commitment, selflessness, patience and wit.
