Notes
Birth
Mom was born the day after Christmas, 1927. Christened Lilly Warner, her ancestry was mixed Irish, English, and German. She was a true child of the great depression, a time when unemployment reached 25% and kids who could earn a nickel or two by sweeping out guest cabins at Fox Lake all day were considered extremely lucky. She was very pretty and caught the eye of classmate and hall of fame basketball legend George Mikan, and some pair they must have made, him at 6’ 11” and her at 5’1” in tiptoes. She was devoutly religious, loved to laugh, and more than anything else, was not afraid of hard work. Mom, I think it’s fair to say, could, and did, outwork all of us kids daily right through her late 70’s. She was amazing, dad called her a“perpetual motion machine,” and she stayed constantly active up until a few years ago when she hurt her back by lugging a chair out to the porch for the St. Vincent de Paul truck. Typical mom.Occupation
Mom was working for the phone company making $125 a week. When dad got back from his honeymoon, and his boss found out that his new wife was out-earning him by $25 a week, he said “We can’t have that” and raised dad to $200. Dad must have felt with mom on his team, he was on another lucky streak.Illness
Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of this year (2008), she was given two months to live. She was more than ready to leave this life and go onto the life to come. And, she probably would have been gone in about two months, had not dad taken ill. Suddenly, mom went from patient to tireless caregiver, just like she had done for all of us kids in the past. The focus shifted from her sufferings to her husband Sam.Death
Lilly was born in Chicago December 26th, 1927 Daughter Nancy Roberts of Phoenix, Sons: Sam of Phoenix, Jim (wife Brenda) of Fort Wayne, IN, Joe (wife Terre) of Yuma, AZ & Steve of Phoenix , AZ.
