BERNARD 'BERNIE' A. PAUL, 80 ROCKFORD - Bernard "Bernie" A. Paul, 80, of Rockford, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 5, 1931, in Chicago, son of Henry and Marie (DeCola) Paul. Bernie graduated from Tuley High School class of 1949 and attended DeVry University, earning a degree in electronics. He was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Bernie married Vivian Hoagland on August 9, 1952. They relocated to Rockford in 1987 from Des Plaines. Bernie was a devoted family man and an incredible father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play ball. He was an avid fan of the Bears and Cubs and will be remembered for his patented football helmet telephones. Bernie was also devoted to his Catholic faith; he spent several years volunteering at St. Mary's Oratory. He will be truly missed by all of his family and by those whose lives he has touched. Bernie is survived by loving wife of 60 years, Vivian; sons, Bernie (Deb) Paul, Mike (Sue) Paul, Joe (Nancy) Paul, Gary (Eileen) Paul and Tony (Jen) Paul; brother, Fred Paul; sister-in-law, Marilyn Paul; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Predeceased by parents; brother, Henry Paul; and sister-in-law, Lucy Paul. Funeral mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at St. Mary's Oratory, 517 Elm St. Entombment in Highland Garden of Memories in Belvidere. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Road.
