He died at 4:45
a.m. Tuesday, Dec.
23, 2003, in Pulaski
Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1904,
in Winamac, he was J. Herbert Hoch
the son of John and
Mary Etta Zellers Hoch. On Sept 8,1929,
in Winamac, he was married to Martha P.
Baughman Behny, who preceded in death
on Jan. 18,2000.
A 1926 graduate of Wabash College,
Mr. Hoch was involved in retail sales and
was the former owner of Hoch Hardware
and Hoch Farm Supply.
He was a member of First Presbyterian
Church of Winamac.
He also was a member of the Tau Kappa
Epsilon Fraternity, a 74-year member
of Winamac Masonic Lodge #262 F&AM,
and South Bend Valley of the Scottish
Rite.
Mr. Hoch was a long-time member of
the Winamac Kiwanis Club and had
served as president and as lieutenant governor.
He had attained a record of 32
years of perfect attendance.
Mr. Hoch also was a charter member of
the Winamac Chamber of Commerce and
served as the first president He was a recipient
of the Chamber's H.J. Halleck
Community Service Award.
He was an organizing member of the
Winamac Alumni Association and served
as the second president of the organization.
He had spent many years raising and
training AKC registered Beagle Dogs for
Bench Trials. He also had served as a
judge for many show competitions.
Mr. Hoch loved to hunt and fish.
After his retirement in 1965, he spent
his summers in Crystal Falls, Mich.
Surviving are one stepson, Donald
Behny and his wife, Jo Ann, Winamac;
two great-nieces, Eilen Jean Mills and Diane
M. Conn, both of Niles, Mich.; three
stepgrand children, Thomas Behny and
his wife, Nikki, LaPorte, Pamela Scheffer
and her husband, Richard, Largo, Fla., and
Meg Nethercutt and her husband, Kevin,
Monticello; two great-great-nieces,
Michelle Hamill and her husband, David,

great-great-nephews, Jeffery Peters and
his wife, Jan South Bend, and Chad Mills.;-
and his wife, Claudia, and Charles Conn
and his wife, June, all of Niles, Mich.; several
step great-grandchildren and several
great-great-nieces and nephews.
One brother, Vernon Lee Hoch; two sisters,
Floy Hetzel and Farrell Sabo; one
niece, LaVergne Hoch Krillenberger; and
one nephew, Robert Hetzel, preceded in
death.
The Rev. L. Edwin Lacy will officiate at
the services. Burial will be in McKinley
Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday
and after 8 a.m. Monday in the mortuary.
A Kiwanis Club service of remembrance
will be held at 7 p.m. and a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday in the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the Pulaski Health Care Center and to
Pulaski Memorial Home Health Care
