March 17, 1996: Herman RIESMEYER remembers family legend about Dorothy RIESMEYER. She ran off with some man while still a young girl and joined the circus or vaudeville. He's not sure which. She returned home at some point. She ran a restaurant on the North Side of Pittsburgh, but it was not very successful. She opened it around the time of the Depression. He thinks she went out of business because she was so good-hearted. He says she let customers run up tabs and they never paid her. Herman remembers the restaurant so it was open when he was living with Aunt Dorothy up on Sprain Street in Fine View. He thinks that's where Aunt Dorothy's daughter, Elva, met her husband, Buddy Davis. He remembers Christmas celebrations on Sprain Street... when the tree would be behind closed doors in the parlor. Santa Claus would be decorating it. Christmas morning they would come down to find the tree all full of wonderful things. He lived on Sprain Street until age 6, then returned for 8th grade and went back to live with his father and Mary on Viola Street when he went to 9th grade. Uncle George made lots of the ornaments and had an animated village under the tree... mostly his own handiwork... little moving figures... skaters... it was in the early 1930's. He remembers getting games for Christmas... candy in stockings... remembers one year getting a ski/slope similar to one he later got for his son Jeff. He remembers receiving oranges and tangerines in his stocking.
