William enlisted in the Union Army on 17 Oct or 16 Sep 1861. He became a sergeant and was killed in the Battle of Po River in Virginia known as the Battle of the Wilderness on 10 May 1864. He served in Captain Henry J. Smith's Co. C, 53rd Reg., 4th Brigade, 1st Division of the 2nd Corps.
