John DUFFIELD was born on 16 Dec 1818 in Frenchcreek Twp, Venango Co, PA. He died in 1879. From the the Venango County - Her Pioneers and People 1919; John was born on the old homestead in French Creek township and spent his boyhood as other farmers of the day did, beginning work at an early age and gathering what education he could in the irregular terms of the local schools. Later he worked on the old canal and for a time teaming, driving a Conestoga wagon - the freight car of that time. Then he turned to farming and in the course of time acquired valuable business interests as well, carrying on a grocery store and a grist mill in Franklin, and investing in oil lands, with considerable financial success as a producer. The family resided at the old home at No. 1110 Elk Street in Franklin.

The 1860 PA census for the Borough of Franklin, Venango Co (#805,189 family 190 page 25) recorded the family with John working as a Miller.
