Monroe Richard "Dick" CARLETON
(8 OCT 1917 - 27 DEC 1989)
He graduated from Birmingham High School 1935.
He served in WWII in the Merchant Marine in Suriname and as Master of rescue
boat QS-58 in the Army Transport Service in the South Pacific (New Guinea,
Philippines, Okinawa). After WWII he served in the National Guard. His
primary occupation was deck officer on Great Lakes freighters, and there

CARLETON, CAPT. MONROE RICHARD "DICK"

Capt. CARLETON was born in Detroit on October 8, 1917 to Edna and Monroe P.CARLETON and died in his home December 27, 1989. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Evelyn; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Lynne of San Diego, CA, Douglas and Vicki, Gordon and Lori, all of Lansing; 1 brother and wife H. Eugene and Katie of Dallas TX; 2 sisters, Mary and Charles CHAPMAN of S. Yarra, Australia, Janet and Robert SHAFFER of Loveland, CO; stepmother, Naomi B. CARLETON of Bradenton, FL; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Until his retirement, Dick was a Deck Officer on Great Lakes freighters and tankers, and had spent one year as a St. Clair river pilot for foreign ships entering the lakes. During World War II he served as Master of a rescue ship for the Army Transport Corps in the South Pacific. He was a life member of Evergreen Lodge #9 F& AM in St. Clair and of Cornell Marysville Chapter #93 O.E.S.
