Elias ROMESBERG

Elias was born on March 20, 1745 or 1748 in Frederick and died at Elk Lick, PA on Oct. 2, 1803. Both his birth and death are recorded. He and his wife Catherine settled in Elk Lick Township, Bedford Co., PA, which was then a part of Somerset County (1795). They are in the 1790 Census with 4 boys and 1 girl; in the 1800 Census, same location, both over 45 with 6 boys and 1 girl. His will is dated Oct. 2, 1803, proven Dec. 1, 1803, Estate #13 Somerset 1803; wife and son-in-law executors. His 8 children are mentioned. Had 500 acres in Elk Lick Township, now Summit Township, near Garrett, PA. Elias was a hunter, trapper, and farmer by trade. His 500 acres was mostly mountain land located on a spur of the Negro Mountains on which today is Mount Davis, highest point in the state of PA-3213 feet above sea level. This farm is his burial place according to files in the Mary BRESAKER Library, Somerset, in a 1930’s survey of Somerset cemeteries. Quote-“In Summit Township on the Carl SHAFFER farm, 10 rods north of the buildings in a field is a large rock and apple tree. Near this are 4 graves marked by common fieldstones bearing no inscription, said to be Elias ROMESBERG and family.
