Jim was born in Woodland, Pennsylvania and attended the local schools, he graduated from Clearfield High School. While in high school he played on the football team, this team had a record of 10-0-1 in regular season, but lost, 12-0 in the play off against Blythe Township. As a note, it would be 54 years before this team would again make the playoffs. After high school he worked as a carpenter in the maintence department for Harbinson-Walker Refractorys. He enlisted in the Air Force October 22, 1942, but he was assigned to the 329th. Infantry, 83rd. Divison. Corporal Undercofler served with this outfit thru the invasion of Normandy and most of the battles of Europe, until action in Nice, France, where he was hit in the knee with shrapnel, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After recovering from the wound, he was assigned to the Ninth Air Force, were he stayed for the next six months until his discharge on December 20, 1945. After the war, Jim worked first, as an automotive mechanic, and later as a tool and die maker for Piper Aircraft. He was an avid outdoors man, loving both hunting and fishing. Some of his other hobbies were gunsmithing and gardening. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service to his country during World War II. Other military awards that Jim held were the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Coduct Medal, Expert Sharp Shooter, World War II Medal, and the European Medal of Combat.
