Individual Details

John S. BOWLBY

(23 JUN 1792 - 6 APR 1862)

He was probably the John S. who served as a private in September of 1814 from New Hampton, New Jersey. Some researchers have his middle initial as "L" but scrutiny of his grandfather's estate papers disclose that it was "S". Warren Co. deed of 16 NOV 1827 shows John S. BOWLBY and wife, Elizabeth, were then of Bethlehem Twp., Hunterdon Co. Colonel Herbert BOWLBY notes that he married Elizabeth CASTNER, but this was John R. BOWLBY born in 1824. John and Elizabeth apparently had at least 6 children: William, Sarah J., Hetty, Hamilton, and Robert M. Notes from the BOWLBY reunion of 1906 give the names of three: Stacy, David P., and Hamilton. Seven children have been identified in this family, but the 1840 census report of Warren Co. suggests there may have been others. In 1840, Stacy, Charles, Bartley, Alexander, and Alfred were living in Mansfield and of approximately the same age. Stacy used Charles, Bartley, and Alfred in naming his children, possibly after his brothers.
