Samuel BARKER

( - 26 AUG 1726)

On pages 19 and 20 of the Barlborough Heritage Centre website it clearly states the following interesting information regarding Martha Barker Bowlby's parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (nee Shawe) Barker:

Samuel was a steward/baliff to Lady Martha de Rodes, widow of Sir Francis de Rodes of Barlborough Hall. Samuel and Elizabeth, like their employees, were of the Quaker religion. They were imprisoned for three months for refusing to sign an oath. Lady Martha wrote to the King to instigate their release.
Samuel managed Rodes coal business and in 1686 took the young John de Rodes to London to meet William Penn. Samuel had already purchased 1000 acres of land in Pennsylvania from Penn in 1682.
Samuel's mother, Tabitha Barker (nee Hunt), is buried in Barlborough Churchyard and has the oldest gravestone, dated 1630. Samuel himself died 26th August 1726 at Barlborough and is buried in the Quaker burial ground at Cinderhill, Handswoth, Yorkshire. Samuel's granddaughter, Mary, daughter
to John, eventually inherited Barborough Hall by her marriage to John Bowden.

Additional Internet information about Barlborough Hall states that it was build in 1583-84 by architect Robert Smythson for Sir Francis de Rodes, a prominent lawyer and judge. The Elizabethan style mansion and its surrounding grounds are located near the village of Barlborough and the town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, in the heart of England. The estate remained in the de Rodes family until it was sold in 1938. In 1939, it became an independent Roman Catholic Jesuit day school for boys and girls ages 3 to 11. Today it is the preparatory school for Mount St. Mary's College at nearby Spinkhill. There are three recent photos of Barlborough Hall on the photos webpage for this Yahoo group.

Incidentally, Martha Barker Bowlby, wife of Thomas Bryan Bowlby (6), was born at Barlborough, Derbyshire in about 1671 and died there in February 1761. She was probably buried at nearby Chesterfield.
