Death
Helen (POHL) BOXER, 87, of Kansas City, MO, passed away June 3, 2005, at Carmel Hills Living Center in Independence. Memorial services will be held on June 9, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. in the George Hamilton Combs Chapel of the Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, with Dr. George Gordon III presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Children's Library at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113. Helen Ruth was born March 12, 1918, the daughter of Carl POHL and Bertha (TALNON) POHL in Omaha, NE. She spent her youth there and graduated from South High School. She soon joined her brother, Bill, in Kansas City and began working at Wolfermans. She married Clinton SESSOMS and for a few years lived in Burlington, IA, where her first daughter, Linda, was born in 1941. Helen moved to New York and in 1945, married Dr. David BOXER and was blessed with a second daughter, Holly Ruth. Helen was able to rely on her brothers in Omaha to help her raise her two children when the tragic and sudden death of Dr. BOXER occurred in 1947. In the 1970's, Helen lived in Miami, FL, and retired from Sears after more than 10 years in the personnel department. She moved to Kansas City to be near her daughter, Holly, son-in-law, R.B. MILLER and three grandchildren, Brooke, Laura and Zach. She spent her retirement years watching her grandchildren play tennis and soccer, volunteering at the public library and in the office at Country Club Christian Church where she was a member. She enjoyed painting with watercolors, knitting, gardening and reading romance novels. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her nine siblings and her daughter, Linda. Helen loved life. Her sense of humor and indomitable spirit will be remembered as she battled through her many illnesses and operations. The family appreciates and thanks the wonderful staff at Carmel Hills as well as the nurses and staff at Crossroads Hospice, who encouraged and comforted Helen. She will be greatly missed by all who admired her and loved her. (Arrangements: Charter Funerals, 816-921-5555) Published in the Kansas City Star on 6/5/2005
