Harold Bennett 'H.B.' Brumbaugh
HUNTINGDON - Harold Bennett "H.B." Brumbaugh, 88, of 160 Aspen Lane, Westminster Woods Retirement Community, Huntingdon, formerly of Juniata College, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Altoona Hospital.
Born May 23, 1911, in Woodbury, Bedford County, he was a son of the late Alvah S. and Nancy L. (Bennett) Brumbaugh.
He is survived by a brother, Leonard Bennett Brumbaugh, Shippensburg, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Bennett Brumbaugh, and a sister, Anna (Brumbaugh) Lashley.
He was a 1929 graduate of Altoona High School; a 1933 graduate of Juniata College; took some graduate classes at Duke University the summer of 1933; and he received the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Juniata College in 1975.
In 1936, he moved into The Cloister, a residence building on the campus of Juniata College and lived there until 1968.
He was employed as follows: 1933-35, Woodbury High School teacher; 1935-36, principal of New Paris-Napier High School; 1936, assistant to Juniata College President Charles C. Ellis; 1939-62, alumni secretary; 1963, named vice-president for development and named curator of the Juniata College Museum; 1976 retired, Vice President of College Advancement Emeritus; 1979-87, president, Weimer-Oller Travel Agency Inc.; and 1979-1994, Juniata College Trustee.
He was a member of Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon. He was also past president of the Middle District Men's Work Council of the Church of the Brethren; former chairman of the Commission on the Ministry, Church of the Brethren; past president of the Rotary Club of Huntingdon; past director of the Huntingdon County United Fund; trustee of the Huntingdon County Library; a member of the Huntingdon County Historical Society; board member of the Pennsylvania State Council of Churches; past president of the Huntingdon County Tourist Promotion Agency; a member of the Pennsylvania Folklore Society; served on the Juniata Board of Trustees from 1979-1994; and served as president from 1968-1970 of the Middle Atlantic District of the American Alumni Council.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stone Church of the Brethren, 17th and Moore streets, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dale W. Dowdy and the Rev. Christy L. Dowdy officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, 245 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon.
A special Juniata College memorial service will be held during Alumni Weekend, Saturday, May 20.
Memorial contributions may be made to Harold B. Brumbaugh Scholarship Fund at Juniata College, 1700 Moore St., Huntingdon, PA 16652.
