Ludwig/Louis CLAPPER
(1769 - 1825)
The following is from the Ludwig Clapper family history 1769-1825 as published in CLAPPERS IN AMERICA.
Ludwig CLAPPER ca 1769 -1825
The Village of Clappertown along Piney Creek in Blair County perpetuates the memory of Ludwig CLAPPER who came here ca 1785 with his parents. He was the youngest son of Henry I and Christena CLAPPER. In the Maryland 1776 census of Washington County Elizabeth Hundred Ludwig was listed as age 7 years of age. The area of Piney Creek was part of newly formed BlairCounty. There is an old family cemetery on this farm where many Clappers including Ludwig and his first wife Mary had been interred. The farm is presently a large dairy farm and the large brick home is still occupied but no longer by descendants.
Ludwig CLAPPER became of age when his name appeared in 1792 in Woodbury Twp. tax returns as now singler and owning a horse. In 1795 he was listed as being now married. in 1794 Ludwig had married his first wife Mary METZKER, daughter of John and Caterine METZKER Sr. To Ludwig and Mary were born four children: Henry, Mary, Christena, and Susan.

Mary CLAPPER died sometime before 1800 and 1806.
There seems to be a controversy regarding Ludwig Clapper's second wife. Was she Elizabeth Stiffler or Elizabeth Brumbaugh? This may clear up the question: "Blue River Township, Henry County, IN, Cemetery Inscriptions", by Thomas Hamm, Published 1982 shows on page 33 - Elizabeth Brombaugh, daughter of Conrad and Christina (Heiser) Brumbaugh married first to Ludwig Clapper, 1769-1825. He died in Huntingdon Co., Pa. Also shows Elizabeth is buried in Wayne Co., IN. She died Sept. 26, 1865 at the age of 87y, 11m, 11d, 2nd wife of John Sr.
"John Urlich Sr., (Son of Daniel Urlich). Married first Christina Brombaugh (1777-1817), the daughter of Conrad and Christina (Heiser Brombaugh). She died and is buried in Bedford Co., PA. He married as his second wife Elizabeth (Brombaugh) Clapper, a sister of his first wife. She is buried here".
