James Owen (Jim) Seymour
James Owen (Jim) SEYMOURwas born February 1, 1893, the son of J. O. and Bird Wilson SEYMOUR on the family farm south of Rantoul and never lived over 1 1/4 miles away during his entire life. He passed away March 28, 1981 after a brief illness.
During his early years he farmed. He also hired out with his team of horses in the local oil and gas fields, often being the one to assemble 6 to 8 neighbors and teams needed to move the steam-powered drilling rig and its accompanying equipment between drilling sites.
In 1930, he bought the milk route from the Rantoul area to Bennett Creamery in Ottawa which he ran until his retirement. He also developed a back haul which consisted of most of the groceries, pop and ice cream for four stores and two restaurants. He was Rantoul's last iceman and would bring back anything customers along his route requested, which might range from feed to eye glasses or a matching spool of thread.
He was his own contractor for the house he lived in which was built on land which once belonged to a freed Negro slave. Most of the freed slave's original log house still stands.
During floods, neighbors in the river bottom north of Rantoul would wait until the last possible moment to move out. Receiving a call for help in the middle of the night, he would light a lantern, saddle the families' two horses which knew all the high ground in the river bottom, get a companion, and help lead them to the safety of higher ground.
He was a member and former trustee of Ruhamah Baptist Church, and a long-time member of both the Cutler Township Board and the Rantoul Rural High School District Board.
He was married to the former Ruth L. DAUGHARTHY July 18, 1929 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1979. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Nadene) PETERS, Ottawa, three sons, Harold SEYMOUR, Manhattan, Edgar SEYMOUR, Freeville NY, and James SEYMOUR, Murrysville PA, three sisters, Mrs. E.L. STRATTON, Birmingham Michigan, Harriet SEYMOUR and Fannie SEYMOUR, both of Rantoul, a brother, Fred SEYMOUR, Junction City and sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dortha Mae SEYMOUR and three brothers Edgar, Quincy, and B. Mac SEYMOUR.
