From "The Studebaker Family in America - 1736-1976"; by Walter CARLOCK, Alvin Girard FAUST and E. Irene MILLER; 1976;page 173:
"Joseph, an orphan aged 18, moved west, locating near Troy, OH where he met & married Catherine. Soon afterwards they became affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. In the fall of 1835 Joseph drove across the country with horses to Union Twp., Delaware Co., IN settling along the Mississinewa River. Their log cabin was located about 40 rods SE of the plot where the first church was later located.
'They were loyal & laboring members of the church. One who knew Catherine well said that Sister Snider never had any difficulty or neighborhood. She was blind 5 years and partly deaf for many years, but was never heard to complain. She died at the residence of her son, Alexander.
'In 1838 Jacob GUMP and Joseph SNIDER were among the first on record who built a flatboat, about 50 or 60 ft. lon, 4 ft. wide and 3 ft. deep. It carried 100 barrels of flour, 2 barrels of lard, 3 barrels of linseed oil and a quantity of bacon, coon skins, ginseng and other cash products for the market in Pery, IN some 60 miles down the river. The crew consisted of four men, each manning an oar. They traveled about 30 miles a day, tying up along shore for the night. After selling the produce, they would sell the boat, buy things they needed and walk back, the entire trip taking 5 days.
'In 1844 with homemade bricks he erected his home in Delaware Co., IN. His political affiliations were with the Whigs."
