Dear Troy and Ray
Robert McCardle/McCarl served in the Mexican War as Robert McCardle, private, enl. 5 May 47 at Stone Valley, age 24, occ. farmer, detailed as wagoner from 15 Jul 47 to 7 Aug 47, listed as sick on Sep-Oct & Nov-Dec Mrs, mustered out with company 21 Jul 48. Company M, 2nd Regiment Wayne Guards. Randy W. Hackenburg, Pennsylvania in the War with Mexico (1992), 305. He also served in the Civil War as Robert McCarl. He is buried in the United Brethren Cemetery, Mapleton (Depot), Union Twp., Huntingdon county. Modern (probably 1940s) stone December 21, 1821-27 October 1887. His wife, Elizabeth (Stephens/Stevens) is buried with him, March 6, 1821-February 15, 1899. In same plot are their son R[obert] Newton, 1854-1919 and Robert Newton's first and second wives, Susannah (Hanawalt) who died at the age of 25 on January 19, 1887 and M[ary] Alice (Henderson), 1868-1940. Edward M., 1882-1940, in the same plot, was a son by the first wife, Susannah. In the 1850 census he is listed as Robert McCardle of Cass township, with children Sarah (age 4), William A. (age 2), and Winfield S. (age 1). I don't have the 1870 census, but in 1880, he is listed as age 59, laborer, b. PA, both parents b. PA. Wife Elizabeth, also 59, b. PA, father b. Ireland, mother b. England. Children: Joseph, age 28 (b. 1852), R. Newton, age 25 (b. 1854), Walter, age 21 (b. 1859), Elmer E. age 16 (b. 1864), and William, age 11 (b. 1869) In the mother's obit in the family Bible, it says that she had 8 sons and one daughter. According to the family Bible in my possession, Robert Newton McCarl was born at Cassville, Pa, August 6, 1854. His first wife was born near Mapleton Depot May 25, 1861. They were married at the residence of Mr. David Hanawalt near Mount Union, May 11, 1881. Children: Eddie Morris, b. 17 November 1882; Louie Elizabeth and William H. b. 10 February 1885. Mary Alice Henderson was born at Mill Creek 1 April 1868. She and R.N.McCarl were married 24 November 1892 at the residence of her father Robert Stinson Henderson at Mapleton Depot.!
They had 7 children: Robert Ernest, James Walter, Clare Newton, Ira Eugene, Steward Spangler, Phebe Jane and Fred Henderson, all in Mapleton Depot. Fred Henderson McCarl was my father-in-law. I expect that the McCardles were from Dublin township, which was divided between Bedford and Huntingdon counties.
