Death

Jacob Brumbaugh, a Civil war veteran and almost a life-long resident of Pleasant valley, died Sat. morning of pneumonia after an illness of 2 weeks. He was born March 14, 1831 in Bedford co., a son of John and Catherine Brumbaugh, decd. He had resided in this vicinity for many years. He enlisted in the Union army from Blair co., being mustered into the service at Harrisburg Aug. 13, 1862, as a private, to serve 9 months in Capt. Szink's and Capt. Hostetler's Co. D., 125th regt, Pa. vol. inf., commanded by Col. John Higgins. He participated in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was discharged May 18, 1863, and then re-enlisted Aug. 20, 1864, in Capt. G.C. Grinner's Co. A, 205th regt. He aided in the construction of the earth works at City Point, Va., and took part in the battles at Petersburg and Fort Steadman. He sustained a gunshot wound of the side in the former battle and on June 2, 1865, he was honorably discharged. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad company for a number of years, being retired 14 years ago. In 1856 he was married to Nancy Davis, who preceded him to the grave 2 years ago. Of this union the following children survive: Mrs. Catharine Templeton and Mrs. David Shope, Pleasant valley; Mrs. Thos. M. McKee, Mrs. Robert Heisler, Mrs. John M. Filer and Mrs. John H. Brumbaugh, all of this city; Jacob M. Brumbaugh, Juniata and Mrs. Geo. L. Nickoli, Harrisburg. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and by the following brothers: Joseph, Franklin, Neb.; Michael, Mapleton and Jerry, Mill Creek. Funeral services will be held at the late residence, 1547 Pleasant Valley ave., at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
