Richard J. Packard, 78, of Railroad St., Jersey Shore (Avis), passed away Sunday afternoon at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, Aug. 9, 2009.
He was born in Jersey Shore July 22, 1931 a son of Donald and Eleanor Jones Packard. He was a Jersey Shore High School grad and was married Aug. 16, 1951 to the former Catherine Truax who survives.
Richard was a retired US Navy Air Mechanic. He had over 22 years active duty spanning the Korea and Vietnam wars. After his retirement from the Navy in 1969, he was employed by Stroehman's, Piper Aircraft and a Rural Express Paper Courier. He was at one time a fire drop airplane mechanic in Montana. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Avis and the Salisbury Sound Organization. He was a former member of the VFW of Texas. He enjoyed traveling, golf and bowling.
Besides his wife Catherine, he is survived by two daughters, Candice L. Johnson (Martin) of Jersey Shore and Donna Lynn Packard of South Williamsport, four sons, Michael L. (Lori) of Avis, Ronald L. (Julie) of Jersey Shore, Thomas L. (Terri) of Jersey Shore and Frederick of Avis, 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, a sister and three grandchildren, Clarence Richard Johnson and twins, Jason and Joshua Packard.
