Johan arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the boat the Neptune, Captain James Ware, on September 30, 1754 from Rotterdam, The Netherlands with 131 men aboard, unknown how many women and children. Johan's trip originated in Weurttemberg, Germany. He was a part of that vast migration of German-speaking immigrants enticed to the New World by the agents of William Penn to colonize Pennsylvania. Many immigrants settled in Pennsylvania but some followed the wagon trail down the eastern side of the Appalachians into North Carolina. When leaving Weurttemberg, he most likely, traveled down the Rhine River to get to Rotterdam, as did many others from Southern Germany. They sailed from Rotterdam and stopped at Cowes, England for provisions, as was the general custom during those long voyages, filled with innumerable hardships. The journey for those who came from Southern Germany in 1754 lasted fully half a year amid such hardships as no one is able to describe adequately with their misery. The passage from Holland to Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, alone, often required from two to four weeks. Before the Atlantic crossing to the New World of America, when the Neptune ported in England, those planning to settle in the New World had to pledge allegiance to King George II of England.

Most of this informaiton is taken from the book compiled by Prof. I. Daniel Rupp's - THIRTY THOUSAND NAMES OF IMMIGRANTS - a collection of upwards of 30,000 names of German-Swiss-French-and others. IMMIGRANTS in Pennsylvania - 1727 to 1776. In this list the name of JOHAN HENRICH KRANTZ appears.
