MECHANICSBURG - Robert 'Bob' B. Peck, 87, of 910 Macoun Drive, Mechanicsburg, originally of Lewistown, entered into heaven at 8:29 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. He was at his home, with his family by his side.Born Sept. 17, 1925, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Melvin and Helen (Pry) Peck. His wife of 64 years, Jean (Lyter) Peck, preceded him in death in January 2011.Bob is survived by: a son, Larry Peck and his wife, Deborah, of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Pamela Peck, of Mechanicsburg; two granddaughters, Karen Wagner and husband, David, and Lori Mainhart and husband, Todd, all of Dillsburg; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Cole Wagner and Carly and Garrett Mainhart; and two sisters, Katherine (Peck) Klinger, of Lewistown, and Winifred (Peck) Linn, of Landisville.One brother, Richard Peck, preceded him in death.Bob attended Lewistown High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18, while still in high school. Because of this, he was not able to graduate with his class, but he later did receive an honorary diploma.Bob was an infantry soldier and served in the United States Army 106th Infantry Division during World War II. He served in the European Theater during the Battle of the Bulge, where he was captured as a German prisoner. He spent several months in captivity until the end of the war when he was liberated.
In his earlier work years, he was employed at Artcraft and then the Arrow Shirt Factory. Later he was a letter carrier for the Lewistown Post Office, retiring with 30 years of service. This was the job he loved, as he was able to be outside, rain or shine, and he enjoyed talking to his many patrons.Bob was a life-long member of Lake Park United Methodist Church, in Lewistown. He was an active member and rarely missed going to church on Sunday. He held various offices and sang in the church choir.He belonged to the Lewistown Masonic Lodge 0203, Mifflin County Shrine, Jaffa-Altoona Shrine, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Altoona and Tall Cedars, Juniata Valley Forest No. 88 and he was a long time member of the Lewistown Coin Club.Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the great outdoors. He took many hunting trips out west, and up to Canada, where he killed a world record caribou of which he was very proud. He also traveled to all 50 states and was in 16 different countries.Bob loved to go to his log cabin in Perry County that he built after his retirement. He cut the trees himself off his land for the logs and did most of the work himself. His cabin was his "pride and joy" and he went there every chance he had. He always called it God's Country as it was so beautiful to him.He also was an avid Penn State football fan.Bob's funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Lake Park United Methodist Church, 400 Crystal Springs Ave., Lewistown.A viewing will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of the funeral service Saturday, at the church.Interment will take place in Juniata Memorial Park, with Pastor Randy Traxler officiating. Graveside military services will be conducted by VFW Post 7011.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lake Park United Methodist Church, 400 Crystal Springs Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044.All arrangements are under the care of Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown.
