James Arthur Bowlsby passed away at his home in Garland, TX surrounded by a loving family on Monday morning, April 7, 2014. He was 82 years old.
Jim was born to Florence (Ulfers) and Arthur Bowlsby in Des Moines, IA where he was raised and educated through college receiving his BA degree in Agriculture from Iowa State University in Ames, IA. While in school Jim refined his musical interest of ‘playin’ the horn’ mastering the tuba which was a hobby that he loved; later playing in the church band, the city band, the Salt Creek Jazz Band and at other engagements in Casper.
In 1950 Jim joined the US Marines. He played in the US Marine Band during the Korean Conflict and received his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant. His military training stayed with him throughout the rest of his life as did his love for the tuba and ‘tootin’ on the horn’, as he would say.
Following his military career Jim married Judith Bishop-Bowlsby and while they lived in Des Moines, IA they had their first daughter Janet (Young). The family later moved to Casper WY and had two more daughters: Joy (Clark), and Jill (Bowlsby-York).
Jim worked at Continental-Emsco in Casper until 1968 at which time he inherited and managed Bishop Sales & Service, an oilfield service and supply company started by his father-in-law John Bishop.
In 1980 he married Pat Carter in Las Vagas, NV. Later Jim and Pat moved to Garland, TX where they worked together at a business that become nationwide with Pat being a craftsperson creating unique hand-painted and ceramic ornaments.
Jim lived a full life. He never met a trout he didn’t like and in his younger years went fishing many, many times with his daughters Janet, Joy and Jill. He also enjoyed getting out in the country with his metal detector and finding ‘treasure’. Along with his love of big bands, John Phillip Sousa, and the tuba he also enjoyed singing in the church choir and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Casper, WY for many years. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. In addition Jim was a very talented leather-tooler and tooled purses, and belts. Being very creative, he also spent a lot of time rock hunting and with his rock cutter and polisher made many pieces of beautiful jewelry out of different shades of jade, agate, and other specimens of rock he found around Wyoming. Jim also
loved to travel and enjoyed socializing with his many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Pat (Underwood-Carter) Bowlsby of Garland, TX; his brother Ben Bowlsby (Shirley) of Brentwood, CA; his 3 daughters Janet Young of Billings, MT, Joy Clark (Jeff) of Casper, WY, and Jill Bowlsby-York (Steve) of Casper, WY; Grandchildren Bethany, Michael, and Joshua Young and Stephanie and Kayla Clark; and Pat’s children Teresa Carter of Dallas, TX, Steven Carter of Columbus, OH and Kenneth Carter of
Garland, TX. Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin, TX was in charge of arrangements.
A visitation was held Friday April 11 with a graveside service including military rights following on Saturday April 12 at Dublin Liveoak Cemetery in Dublin, TX where Jim was laid to rest.
The family requests that any memorials be sent to Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, WY in Jim’s name. Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 S. Wilson Street, Casper, WY 82601.
