Individual Details
Sylvester BOWLBY
(25 MAY 1836 - 4 JAN 1921)
Information on this branch of the family comes from the research and notes of LaVerne (BOWLSBEY) ABEL and Blanche (FORD) BOWLSBEY, both of Maryland. Apparently Sylvester was illiterate and, after moving to Maryland, his family accepted the spelling of their name as "BOWLSBEY". According to family tradition, Elizabeth was the daughter of John ASTLE, who emigrated to New Jersey and then moved to Maryland. Sylvester followed the ASTLE family to Maryland in order to marry Elizabeth.
Because Maryland was a southern state, Sylvester left his wife and two infant daughters, and returned to Flemington, NJ, where he and his brother, Aaron, enlisted on 3 SEP 1862 in Company E, 31st New Jersey Regiment. On 4 JUN 1863 he was honorably discharged and returned to his family in Maryland. Sylvester filed for a Civil War pension 26 FEB 1891.
