Death
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Gerald B. Smith, Colonel USAF, (Ret.), 78, of San Antonio, Texas, died Feb. 14, 2002. Born Sept. 28, 1923, in Big Valley, he was a son of the late Esther and Wallace Smith. His wife of 49 years, Mary Smith, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Deborah Fischer, son-in-law, Dr. Conrad Fischer, and two granddaughters, Alexis and Anna Fischer, all of Seabrook, TX; sisters, Naomi Barber and husband, Stanley, and Joyce Smith of Pennsylvania; and nieces and nephews, all of Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold. He was a proud member of the 15th Troop Carrier Squadron 9th Air Force. He received his ROTC commission at Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1950. He was an active alumnus of Pennsylvania State University. After retirement from the USAF in 1976, he taught in the Northside School District in San Antonio for 11 years. Interment will be held this spring at Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. The Porter Loring Mortuary North handled the arrangements.
