Individual Details
Andrew Burget BOWLBY
(22 JUN 1846 - 12 JUL 1874)
As a young man at home with his parents, he was helping his father cut wood for the winter and cut his toe off. According to Margery (as told to her granddaughter Nona) his mother sewed it back on and the toe healed. In 1874 he was wearing shoes too small and must have irritated the old wound and got infected turning to blood poisoning from which he died.
He enlisted in the Indiana 35th infantry regiment Co. D, 9 Nov 1864 and mustered out 30 Sept 1865. I have his pension and military records from the National Archives in Washington DC. It consists of a copy of their marriage license, Margery's obituary, her death certificate and numerous affidavits signed by friends and relatives affirming that she was his widow. One is even signed by his parents...Joseph Bowlby (age 75) and Elizabeth C. Bowlby (age 70). Margery first filed for his pension in 1887 , then again in 1890. She did not receive it until 1894. I am not sure why there was such a delay but I have heard that it was very hard to get those pensions without a large amount of proof.
