George F. STONE, 90, formerly of Hesston, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at 8:55 p.m., at The Oaks, Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. Born Jan. 7, 1911, in Hesston, he was a son of the late Clarence H. and Lena Belle (Fink) STONE. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers: Cornett YOCUM, Meda SHOWERS, Maud STONE, Blaine STONE and Hiram STONE. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mr. STONE was a member of Standing Stone Post No. 1754 VFW. and Frank P Hommon Post 24. American Legion, both of Huntingdon. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1962. with the rank of sergeant first class. During World War II, he served with the 98th Signal Battalion and received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars for the New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon campaigns. He was also the recipient of the Meritorious Service Unit Emblem, the Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. Mr. STONE enjoyed gardening, baseball, woodcutting and keeping in touch with friends via greeting cards. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct., 6, at 11 a.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Richard Harter officiating. Interment will be made in the Grove Cemetery, James Creek, RD. 1.
