Henry SMALL

Henry SMALL, son of Henry SMALL and Catherine WARE, was born Apr. 2, 1835 in Montgomery Co., Ohio, near Dayton, where he resided until 1865, when he came to Kansas and settled in Jefferson county. For a year he worked as a freighter, driving a wagon from Leavenworth to Ft. Larned in the south part of Kansas. He recalled vividly that his wagon was the seventh in a train of 33 wagons. He was married Sept. 13, 1863 to Susan FAGER in Darke Co., Ohio. On marc h 20, 1866 they moved to Kansas locating on a farm in Mission Twp., which was named Mound Valley Farm. Mr. Small was the first rural mail carrier for the Horton postal service. He delivered mail with a horse and buggy for 30 years and retired at the ageof 88, being the oldest carrier in the United States. His 100th birthday was celebrated with a basket dinner at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mellie Hartley, in APR 1935. He passed away OCT 28, 1935.
