Hans CHRISTENSEN

In 1873 the NZ government advertised in Danish & Scandinavian for
imagrants offerring work for 8-10 shiilings per day building roads and
railways. Farm labour $76 a year. Bread was 5c for 4 lb.
Hans emigrated from Hanburg on the 8th may 1874 at 5pm on board steamer
"Jeani Eur Ay"for London. Then onboard Sailing Ship "Reichstay"a ship
weighing 737 tonnes. Ship birthed at Wellington on 8th August 87 days.
He then moved to Featherston and employed as a storeman. On 9th Sept 1879
moved to Mt Bruce where he brought 45 acres for $268. Hans Jorgan
Christensen also purchased a section of land adjacent to this property.
The farm at that time was covered with native bush. He arrived in
Wellington with the equivalent of 15cents in his pocket.
