John DOWNING
(6 May 1846 - 25 Aug 1930)
Hutt Valley Independent newspaper 02 June 1917
On Sunday old John Downing of Wallaceville went out to shoot hares and took Bryce Barker’s two boys with him. Apparently the old man’s ability as a marksman was proportionate to his education attainment for instead of hitting one of Bryce Barker’s hare he hit Bryce Barkers younger heir – peppering the boy with shot from the groin to the knee. The boy was taken to a doctor and is doing as well as can be expected. Grandpa will take a spell now perhaps till he can tell hare from heir. Keep your hair on John what’s left of it.
