A W HOGG
(1845 - 1920)
Hogg had left his native Glasgow for Australia at the age of 13. After
many years of varied expoerience in mining and store keeping he found he
could write easily and with vogour; when he to speak at a meeting, not
merely did he enjoy himself but those at the back of the Hall could hear
what he had to say. Masterton, ever conservative, distrustful of the
Politician who is less than a statesman has with doubtful judgement chosen
to let time obscure the contribution of this forceful jounalist.
He arrived in NZ in 1877 and after managing the Dunedin Äge"came to
Masterton as editor of the "Star". The Star was one of the many ventures
of restless "Rag-planter"joseph Ives. On Masterton Anniversary, 21/5/1881
with the help of Charles Perry's ready strength the first number was
turned off the press and the "Daily's"monopoly was at an end. Mor can be
found in book "Mastertons first 100 years.
Mr Hogg was a member of Parliament The Hogg's lived in Church St,
