Notes
Death
There was a coroners’ report into his death as it was due to a logging accident. It appears from the coroner’s inquest that the family didn't keep in contact with one another, as the gentleman taken to identify the body was his Uncle, David Thomas Wiley and he stated he had only known David Robert about 3 months. He states “I am the deceased’s uncle, his father being my brother who died 18 months ago. I had never met the deceased until I met him at Mr Kelly's mill, Mokau River about 3 months ago. His mother lives at Foxton . He was generally working away from home. From what I saw of the deceased he appeared to be a steady careful young man. He belonged to ’TeKara’ (I am not sure what is meant by this). It appears the accident happened about 5pm when David and a group of other men went to cut down some trees to log for the mill. While felling the tree, it fell at the wrong angle crashing into another tree, which fell on David. He had been standing about 30ft away. The Coroner concluded that he was accidentally killed by a tree falling upon him, while at work and no blame was attached to any person.
