When the 1861 census was taken on April 7th, John had been a widower for only 4 months. He died in 1866 at the young age of 34, and his death certificate stated that he was aged 35, was employed as a labourer on the clay mines, his death was registered by William Thomas, labourer, who was present at the death (this was John's brother inlaw), and cause of death was: Pleuro pnuemonia (3 months), along with two other conditions listed which are, unfortunately, somewhat illegible; one he suffered for 3 months, and the other for 6 weeks).
