Individual Details

Claude Thériault

(1637 - 17 Sep 1725)

After his marriage, Claude continued to live at his father's farm. On 2 Aug 1695, the British captain, Fleetwood Emes, attacked and seized Port Royal and demanded that the inhabitants swear an oath of allegiance to the British crown. Claude Theriault, his brother Bonaventure, and his brothers-in-law, PierreThibodeau and Pierre Guilbeau, were among those who signed the oath of allegiance.

However, on 25 Sep 1697, Acadie was returned to the French king. In the 1698 census, Claude was listed as 62 years old and among the most prosperous farmers of Port Royal with 18 arpents of valuable land, a large herd, and an orchard of 50 fruit trees.

In 1704 and in 1707 when ships from Boston attacked Port Royal again, Claude and Marie sought refuge in the forest with others while the younger inhabitants (including their sons) participated in the armed defense of Port Royal.

While CLAUDE'S birth certificate is not available, the firstCensus of Acadie in 1671, records him to be 34 years of age atthe time. It is therefore safe to assume that Claude was bornABT 1637". This same census indicates that CLAUDE owned sixcattles and one sheep. The Port Royal Acadien census of 1678-79indicates that CLAUDE TERRIOT and Marie Gautrot owned 3 acres ofland, and 5 cattles. At the time, they had 3 boys age 16 (bornin 1662), age 9 (born in 1669), age 1 (born in 1677) and fourgirls; age 14 (born in 1664), age 12 (born in 1666), age 8 (bornin 1670) and age 4 (born in 1674). The children are not named inthe Census.
