Jacques Chouinard

(6 Jan 1663 - 20 Oct 1721)

All Chouinards in North America are descendants of Jacques Chouinard born in Beaumont-la-Ronce, Touraine, France on Jan 6, 1663. We are not too sure as to when Jacques came to Québec but as of 1685, the name Chouinard disappears from the registries in Beaumont-La-Ronce. We definitely know of his presence in Québec when his marriage contract was notarized by Louis Chambalon on May 30, 1692.

Jacques was a farmer. On Oct 27, 1698 a lot of approximately nice acres wide, along the St-Lawrence River near Port-Joli, was made available to him through Sieur Charles Aubert de la Chesnaye. That`s where the family settled.

In 1985 a commemorative monument was erected on this ancestral site. In 1989, Quebec officially dedicated this site - Beaumont-la-Ronce - in recognition of the link between Port-Joli and Beaumont-la-Ronce, the birth place of all the Chouinards of America.

Jacques and his wife, Louise Jean, had sixteen children. Six died in infancy. Five sons, Pierre, Eustache, Pierre le cadet, François and Julien had families which carried on the Chouinard name.

The family motto: "Be worthy of thy daily bread."

Marie, Théodore Lebrun`s wife, is from Pierre`s line.
