Abraham Martin

(1589 - )

Scottish origins. Captain.

Abraham, owner of the land, left his name to the field where the Wolfe and Montcalm armies met thereby ending the French rule in Canada. Les Plaines D'Abraham. Abraham was also one of the first three proprietors in Québec - Louis Hébert, Guillaume Couillard and Abraham Martin.

Arrived in 1619 Quebec, went to France after the taking of Quebec by Kirk on July 24, 1629 but came back to Quebec in 1633.

It is not recorded why he had this dit name, L'Ecossais, the assumption could be made that he spent sometime in Scotland or was Scotish. Martin is a large family name in Scotland.

Per James Carten, "There is evidence in Dundee, Scotland of an Abraham that may have been a son of this Abraham"... Graves exists for "Abraham Martine Frenchman, chirugeon barber, lawful son of Abraham Martin, merchant, burgess of the city of Metz in Lorraine". The death date is Jun 13, 1673, age 57. (birth about 1616). "Sarah Auchinleck, wife of Abraham Martine frenchman, chirugeon barber", died Jul 25, 1665, age 40.

The only thing that ties the Quebec Abraham with the Dundee Abraham remains the fact our Abraham Martin used the dit name "L'Ecossais" and that the dates sort of mesh together. This is way too speculative for me.... but others have said they are the same (without proof).
