The Life and Times of Captain Charles Boucher (1658–1728)

Early Life along the St. Lawrence

On April 4, 1658, Charles Boucher was born into the rugged frontier of New France. Raised along the waters of the St. Lawrence River as the son of early pioneers François Boucher and Florence Gareman, Charles grew up in a world defined by wilderness and water. The vast riverways were the primary highways of the colony, and from a young age, Charles developed an intimate knowledge of the currents, tides, and seasonal hazards of the St. Lawrence.

Marriage on the River Frontier

In the spring of 1685, twenty-seven-year-old Charles sought to build a household of his own. He formed a union with nineteen-year-old Marguerite-Agnès Pelletier (dite Antaya), the daughter of a prominent fur-trading family.

Instead of an immediate formal parish entry, their union was established through a notarized marriage contract signed with Notary Daniel Normandin. The contract was drafted at Île-du-Pas, a picturesque island sitting directly across the water from Sorel, Quebec. The couple would go on to raise a large family, welcoming eleven children over two decades of life together along the riverbanks.

Master of the River

By 1692, Charles had risen to prominence as a master of river transport—a maître de barque or riverboat captain. Steering heavy wooden riverboats (barques) between Quebec City, Sorel, and Montreal, he transported crucial supplies, pelts, and colonists. Navigation in New France was perilous, requiring skilled leadership to clear rapids, navigate shallow channels, and avoid hostile encounters during decades of colonial conflict. As a devout Roman Catholic and respected pilot, Captain Boucher earned his livelihood on the water, securing a reputation as a trusted commander along the St. Lawrence highway.

Final Years and Legacy

After decades spent commanding river vessels and tending to his land holdings near the islands of Sorel and Berthier-en-Haut (now Berthierville), Charles lived to see his children marry into surrounding pioneer families.

Passing away in August 1728 at seventy years of age, he was laid to rest at Berthier-en-Haut on August 10, 1728. Charles Boucher left behind a legacy as a hardy riverboat captain, an early island settler, and a patriarch whose descendants helped populate the historic river communities of Quebec.
