Jean Gagnon

(26 Jan 1688 - 27 Aug 1759)

On August 23, 1759, a detachment of 300 men under Captain Montgomery had been sent to St-Joachim where residents fought against them. All were taken prisoners and killed in a very cruel fashion. The local priest, Father Portneuf, who stayed to assist his parishioners was hit repeatly by a sword. (Garneau Vol 3 page 318)

'There were several of the enemy killed and wounded and a few prisoners taken, all of whom, the barbarous Captain Montgomery, who commanded us, ordered to be butchered in a most inhuman and cruel manner' - Colonel Malcolm Fraser`s lieutenant, of the 78th, manuscript journal relating to the operations before Québec in 1759.
The prisoners taken and butchered were: Louis Paré, Jean & Pierre Gagnon, Michel Magnan, Charles Languedoc, Jean Fortin and Louis Allaire-Dallaire, were buried on Aug 27 1759 in Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré.
