The story of the Bonhomme dit Beaupré family took a major turn toward professional distinction with the birth of Noël Bonhomme on November 13, 1684. Born in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Québec, he was the son of Ignace Bonhomme dit Beaupré and Agnès Morin. Noël was raised in an ambitious family that valued land development and community leadership, surrounded by the rapidly expanding rural networks of Sillery and Sainte-Foy. As he grew into adulthood, he did not settle for the life of a standard pioneer farmer. Instead, he mastered the complex mathematical and legal skills of land surveying, an indispensable profession in a growing colony where unclear boundary lines frequently caused fierce disputes between landowners and lords.

Chapter II: Mapping the Royal Government of Québec (1718–1736)

By 1718, Noël had formally established himself as a trusted royal surveyor. Operating during the golden age of New France’s agrarian expansion, his meticulous nature and sharp eye for detail quickly won him a stellar reputation. Over a remarkably prolific career spanning thirty-four years, he drew up nearly 900 official surveying acts, maps, and land minutes. His services were in constant demand across every corner of the colonial administration. He traversed the north and south shores of the St. Lawrence River, stepping onto the rolling hills of the Côte de Beaupré, mapping the farms of Île d'Orléans, and traveling deep into remote wilderness tracts to establish legal limits for incoming settlers.

Chapter III: Unlocking the Beauce and Settling Feudal Feuds (1737–1743)

The pinnacle of Noël’s career arrived when he was selected to handle some of the most complex geopolitical assignments in the history of the colony. In December 1737 and January 1738, he led a major survey expedition into the newly opened territory of Nouvelle-Beauce. Braving the brutal winter cold, he mapped out the fresh land grants conceded to the prominent official Thomas-Jacques Taschereau, effectively laying the geographic foundation for the settlement of the entire Beauce region.

A few years later, in 1743, his expertise was called upon to settle a massive legal crisis. Following a messy estate sale by heirs, a bitter partition dispute threatened to destabilize the region south of Québec City. At the request of high-ranking colonial nobles—including Jacques-Hugues Péan de Livaudière, Charles-Marie Couillard de Beaumont, and Marguerite Forestier—Noël undertook the delicate task of charting the exact boundaries of the Fiefs of Beaumont, Vincennes, and Saint-Gilles. His definitive report successfully brought an end to the feud, restoring peace to the regional gentry.

Chapter IV: The Resting Place of a Master Craftsman (1752–1755)

Noël finally laid down his surveying chains and compass in 1752, retiring after decades of taxing physical travel across the Canadian bush. His voluminous collection of reports remained behind as an enduring testament to his absolute precision, structural clarity, and dedication to the rule of law.

Noël passed away on May 28, 1755, at the age of 70, just as the clouds of the Seven Years' War were beginning to gather over the colony he had spent his life mapping. He was buried the following day, May 29, 1755, in the parish of L'Ancienne-Lorette. He left behind a vast geographical legacy that shaped the physical landscape of modern Quebec, remembered to history not just as a pioneer, but as the master surveyor who brought order to the wilderness of New France.
