The Story of Gervais Bisson:

From the Perche Province to the Shores of New FranceEarly Life in France (c. 1601–1649)

Gervais Bisson was born around 1601, likely originating from Contres-en-Vairais in the ancient province of Maine (near the Perche region of France). Around 1640, he married Marie Lereau (also recorded as L’Hérault). Although the Bisson family maintained strong ties to Saint-Cosme-de-Vair, their early family life was spent in the nearby village of Pouvrai, in the department of Orne. It was there in Pouvrai that the couple welcomed their eldest sons: Gervais, baptized on February 22, 1642, and Antoine, baptized on June 20, 1645.

During this period, momentum for transatlantic emigration was building across the region. At the Hôtel du Cheval Blanc in Saint-Cosme-de-Vair, Robert Giffard—a doctor and pioneer seigneur—held persuasive recruitment talks inspiring local families to dream of a new life in Canada. Among those caught up in this vision were Marie Lereau’s brother, Simon Lereau, as well as Gervais Bisson and his younger brother, Florent Bisson. Encouraged by friends and neighbors who had already signed contracts to settle Giffard’s seagny at Beauport, the Bisson brothers prepared to make the journey.

Crossing the Atlantic and Initial Scouting (1650–1651)

In 1650, Gervais Bisson made his first voyage across the Atlantic alone, serving as a laborer or domestic servant (domestique) upon his arrival in Quebec. Historical records first note his presence in New France on September 19, 1650, and again on October 4, 1650, when he stood as a witness at the baptism of Étienne Gagnon in Quebec City. Having scouted the territory and assessed its prospects, Gervais returned to France in 1651. Back home in Saint-Cosme-de-Vair, Gervais and Marie welcomed another son, Jean, who was baptized on October 1, 1651, though the child does not appear to have survived to make the journey overseas.

Family Relocation to New France (1652–1658)

In 1652, Gervais crossed the Atlantic once more, this time bringing his entire extended family to settle permanently. Traveling aboard the ship of Captain Pointel or Captain Poulet, the migrant group included his wife Marie Lereau, their sons Gervais (age 10) and Antoine (age 7), as well as his brother Florent Bisson, Florent’s wife Jeanne Yvon, and their children Mathurine (age 14) and Michel (age 12).

The family established roots in the Quebec region. On December 30, 1654, Gervais and Marie brought their daughter, Simone-Barbe, to be baptized in Quebec City.
On March 1, 1655, Gervais acquired his first land grant: a parcel measuring 1 arpent wide by 8 arpents deep in the Saint-François area of Côte Saint-Jean, near Sillery. The grant was conceded by Jean Bourdon, the Attorney General and Chief Engineer of the colony who had drawn French Canada’s first official map in 1641. Later that same year, Bourdon married Anne Gasnier, a key figure who would go on to welcome and support the King’s Daughters (Filles du du Roi) upon their arrival in New France between 1663 and 1673.

Settling in Sillery and Expanding Land Holdings (1659–1665)

On August 10, 1659, Gervais Bisson and his eldest son, Gervais Jr., received the sacrament of confirmation from Monsignor François de Laval, the newly arrived Vicar Apostolic who had landed in Quebec just weeks prior on June 16. At this time, French Canada was a fragile colony with a total European population of under 2,000 people spread across 60 leagues. The Quebec region remained the primary population center with nearly 1,200 inhabitants, while small settlements were emerging at Trois-Rivières and Montreal.

While Gervais maintained his primary residence at Saint-François on Côte Saint-Jean, he systematically acquired additional properties in neighboring areas. He held a 50-arpent parcel at Côte Sainte-Geneviève, situated between the lands of Jean Leclerc dit Le Bouteleux and Pierre Pinguet, which he sold to Romain Duval on July 8, 1663. On February 18, 1663, Father Jérôme Lalemant, Superior of the Jesuits in Quebec, granted Gervais another property measuring 2 arpents wide by 30 arpents deep at Côte Saint-Michel in Sillery. Nestled between the Jesuit domain and the farm of Mathurin Moreau, this land would later be purchased from the estate by Gervais Jr. on February 10, 1689, for 600 livres.

Final Years and Legacy (1666–1674)

The official censuses of 1666 and 1667 capture Gervais Bisson in his mid-60s, working as an established farmer. The 1667 census notes that he owned 4 head of horned cattle, had 12 arpents of land cleared and under cultivation, and employed a hired hand named Jacques Senson. Over the years, Gervais hired additional farmhands to assist with the rigorous manual labor of clearing and working the soil, including Manuel Rodrigue and Pierre Brannelet.
Gervais Bisson died on July 31, 1674, at Côte Saint-Michel at approximately 72 years of age. He was buried the following day, August 1, 1674, in the Saint-Joseph cemetery near the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Quebec City, leaving behind a lasting lineage and a foundational contribution to early French-Canadian history.
