Antoine Rouillard
(1616 - 28 Apr 1666)
A carpenter, Antoine was born about 1615 in St-Come-de-Vair (arrondissement of Mamers, diocese of Le Mans), Perche, the son of Noel Rouillard and Barbe Marchand. Antoine's mother died some time before 1634, when Noel Rouillard married Jacqueline Benard (widow of Toussaint Maufay). Antoine was in Canada as early as 1650, when he is noted at Quebec City in a contract drawn up by notary Audouart. Antoine and Thomas Touchet, both qualified as master carpenters, promised to build a 30-by-20-foot house for Noel Morin, at the price of 200 livres plus one minot of peas. By that December, the two carpenters' price had risen to 300 livres, a barrel of lard, a barrel of wheat, six bottles of brandy and four bottles of wine. While the house was bigger--40 by 20 feet--so was the client: Nicolas Juchereau de Saint-Denis. Antoine's clientele continued to become more illustrious. On 12 Dec 1663, the Conseil Souverain awarded the repair and addition work on the Fort Saint-Louis in Quebec City to Antoine and Jean Chesnier, allocating 2,930 livres for the work.
On 17 Mar 1666 (notary Becquet), Barbe de Boulogne, widow of Governor Louis d'Ailleboust, contracted Antoine and Jean Chesnier to build her a two-story store in the basse ville for 468 livres, two bottles of wine and two bottles of brandy.
About 1663, the family settled in the fief of St-Francois, on land adjacent to the present-day convent of Notre-Dame de Bellevue. The 27 residents of this settlement reached the settlement of Quebec proper by way of the 'Route Ste-Genevieve', today's 'Rue Gomin'. In the 1666 census, the family had two servants--Andre Puplas and Eleonard Faucher--living with them.
