Chapter I: A Child of the Percheron Exodus (1633–1634)

The story of the Boucher family, a foundation of French North America, reached a monumental chapter with the birth of Galleran Boucher (frequently recorded as Jean-Galleran Boucher dit Boisbuisson). He was baptized on February 16, 1633, in the quiet rural parish of Saint-Langis-lès-Mortagne, located in the ancient province of Perche, France. Galleran was the son of Marin Boucher and his second wife, Perrine Mallet. He was raised in a sprawling, blended household. Alongside his full brother Marin (baptized in 1630), Galleran shared his childhood with seven older half-siblings from his father's first marriage to the late Julienne Baril: Nicole, Jean, Louise, François, Étiennette, Charlotte, and Marie.

Galleran’s life was barely underway when the global ambitions of his family forever changed his destiny. In the spring of 1634, when Galleran was just an infant, his father Marin joined a historic, organized migration wave of Percheron families recruited by the Juchereau brothers and Robert Giffard. The family packed their belongings, boarded a wooden vessel at the port of Dieppe, and braved a treacherous Atlantic crossing. In the summer of 1634, they arrived at the fortified outpost of Québec. Carrying a baby across the ocean into a vast wilderness, Marin and Perrine established a homestead, ensuring that Galleran grew up as part of the very first generation of European children to be raised on the Canadian frontier.

Chapter II: Mastering the Trade at Château-Richer (1635–1667)

As the colony expanded outward from Québec City along the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, the Boucher family settled on the alluvial plains of La Côte-de-Beaupré, specifically in the emerging district of Château-Richer. It was here that Galleran's family continued to grow, welcoming younger siblings including his brother Pierre Boucher dit Pitoche, born in 1639.

Growing up on a rugged frontier farm, Galleran mastered the complex and indispensable mechanical trade of a charron (cartwright). In a colony that relied on wooden carts, sleds, and wheels to transport stone, timber, and crops through dense woods and deep winter snows, his skills as a master wheelwright made him an essential driver of the local economy. On October 10, 1661, Galleran married Marie Leclerc at Château-Richer. Marie was the daughter of fellow pioneers Florent Leclerc and Marie Vignault. The young couple established their own thriving homestead, and their early success was captured in the historic 1666 and 1667 censuses of New France, which documented Galleran as an industrious master artisan and habitant.

Chapter III: Migration to the South Shore Frontier (1668–1690)

Between 1662 and 1686, Marie gave birth to nine children, securely branching the Boisbuisson line of the Boucher name. While Galleran spent nearly three decades reinforcing his status as a prosperous citizen of Château-Richer, the call of new land grants eventually drew him across the water. In the late 1680s, following a pattern of generational expansion, Galleran relocated his family to the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River, establishing a new estate in the newly opened coastal parish of Rivière-Ouelle (Kamouraska). He was joined in this regional migration by his brother Pierre dit Pitoche. In this new frontier setting, Galleran's children formed powerful marital alliances with neighboring pioneer clans, including the Mivilles, Gagnons, and Pelletiers.

Chapter IV: The Final Reinterment of a Pioneer Patriarch (1691–1714)

Galleran Boucher lived a remarkably long and productive life, witnessing New France transform from a fragile string of missionary outposts into a well-governed, self-sustaining royal province. He passed away at the advanced age of 81 in the winter of 1714, outliving his brother Pierre by seven years. Galleran was buried on March 28, 1714, in the parish cemetery of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse in Rivière-Ouelle. Leaving behind a vast network of children, grandchildren, and master craftsmen, the infant who had been carried across the Atlantic in 1634 left an indelible mark on the physical infrastructure of Canada, remembered forever as one of the great founding artisans of the St. Lawrence valley.
